Tobermory: a tiny island ‘capital’

Tobermory has a very cute bay of brightly coloured houses set against a backdrop of Hebridean hills. It’s situated in the west of Schotland, just in front of the Hebrides.
Tobermory’s harbour is one of the most photographed places in Scotland. It’s name comes from the Gaelic tobar-mhoire which translates as "Mary's Well", after an ancient holy well dedicated to the Virgin Mary in what is now the upper part of the village. It has been a film location and inspiration for various children’s television series like Balamory. This story-book fishing village is the capital of the Isle of Mull and the heart of island life and the centre of its busy tourist industry.
Apart from the Tobermory whisky distillery, that dates back to 1798 don’t miss the local book shop and get a signed copy of the School Ship Tobermory Series by Alexander McCall Smith.
