‘Karoo’ by Lawrence G. Green

I was able to find a first edition (1955) of ‘Karoo’ by Lawrence G. Green (1900-1972), a prolific writer of travelogues in South Africa. He is considered a ‘raconteur’ rather than a writer, which is a shame because his work is extremely well researched and also rather easy to read.

Green's work encompasses all the cultural diversity of the sub-continent, often alluding to changes in the social and political milieu but rarely judgemental in regard to socio-political issues under debate at the time. Unlike many of his contemporaries of South African literature, he is devoid of any political commentary or critique.

His work seems to be an ideal companion to my trip to the Karoo. His map on the inside cover will be my guide …
